衔接与连贯是语篇研究中的热点。一般认为衔接与连贯是两个不同的概念。关于衔接与连贯的关系,存在两种截然不同的观点。以Halliday为代表的学者认为衔接是构成连贯的必要因素;以Brown&Yule为代表的学者认为连贯取决于交际者的背景知识。目前,英汉语篇对比研究大都以系统功能语法为理论框架,研究英汉语篇衔接手段的异同。这种研究没有深入到语言形式背后的文化、认知机制,并不能对英汉语篇的异同做出深刻有力的解释。语篇是一个复杂的文化、认知现象,只有综合全面的研究,才更加接近其实质。本文运用图式理论对人类文化学、语用学、认知语言学及功能语法在语篇连贯研究方面所取得的成果进行整合,认为衔接与连贯是同一事物的不同方面;衔接是语篇内部的语义关系,连贯是交际者的文化图式与语篇形式互动形成的语义关系。语篇内部的衔接手段可以划分为;语法手段、词汇手段、修辞策略和隐喻。语篇衔接不是由这些手段本身决定,而是由隐藏在这些手段背后的文化意象决定的。衔接和连贯是语篇的共性,但具体衔接手段的选择受到个体认知能力和群体文化模式的影响,存在文化差异。然后对英汉语篇中的衔接手段进行对比,发现英汉语篇在语法手段、词汇手段、修辞策略和隐喻四个方面都存在差异。英语语篇倾向于运用语言符号使语篇逻辑关系明确化,汉语语篇倾向于将语篇逻辑关系隐含于语篇之中。同一事物在英汉语篇中会触发不同的文化图式,引起不同的词汇搭配,产生不同的隐喻意象。英汉文化中“礼貌”图式不同,语篇修辞策略也不同。正式场合下的英语语篇多采用演绎方式,非正式场合下则多采用归纳方式;汉语语篇的构建方式恰与此相反。文化图式在语篇连贯构建中起着决定作用。在跨文化交际中,交际双方应该输入文化线索以利于对方调整固有认知模式,促进连贯的建立,达到交际目的。该选题研究的实用价值在于;1)指导人们进行有效的言语交际,尤其是在跨文化语境中的言语交际;2)促进翻译研究并能在具体翻译操作上提供策略;3)指导外语教学,尤其是阅读与写作教学。
