从目的论视角看梁启超和严复对原文本的选择

论文摘要

谈到近代中国对西方知识的译介,不能不提到梁启超和严复。梁启超的《论译书》不仅论证了翻译西方书籍的重要性,而且还论证了翻译的策略、方法及其存在的问题,提出了一系列精辟的见解。严复提出的翻译三原则至今影响着我国的翻译界。他们各自都留下了影响深远的翻译作品。而前人已经对晚清这两位译者进行了各个方面的研究,但是绝大多数研究都是在传统翻译理论的指导下进行的。本文试图从目的论角度出发,探讨梁启超和严复在晚清时期的翻译目的,他们的翻译目的怎样影响他们对于原文本的选择,以及他们对原文本的选择有哪些异同。本文的理论基础是由德国翻译理论家汉斯·弗梅尔提出的翻译目的论。弗梅尔认为,人类的一切活动,包括翻译行为,都是有目的的。不同译者在不同时期的翻译目的会有所不同,不同的翻译目的进而决定了译者对原文本的选择,而译者通过选择不同的作品进行翻译,以期达到他们各自的翻译目的。在分析晚清时期的社会、文化和翻译等各方面背景的基础上,本文论证了梁启超和严复的不同的翻译目的是怎样决定他们对原文本的选择,以及他们的个人经历、教育背景、预期的译文读者、文化态度和共同的目的是怎样影响他们对文本的选择的。本文的结论部分指出,梁启超和严复不断寻求救国救民之路,一心想通过翻译将国外先进的科学、文化、思想等介绍到祖国来,使国人开阔视野,知己知彼,从而推动社会的进步,以达到富国强民的目的。翻译目的论认为,决定任何翻译过程的最高准则则是整个翻译行为的目的,而不同译者在不同时期的翻译目的不尽相同,进而影响对原文本的选择。对译者的评价应该是看一个译者是否实现了自己的翻译目的。通过本文的研究,我们可以发现梁启超和严复都实现了自己的翻译目的。
