罗慕士英译《三国演义》研究：聚焦文化映像

论文摘要

本文基于功能翻译理论和释意派理论,对罗贯中所写《三国演义》的最佳英译本——罗译本,从文化方面探求其特色与得失。功能翻译理论认为,译者的翻译策略是由其翻译目的所决定的。在抽象概念和具体意象的翻译中,译者罗慕士通过对中国哲学词汇、官名和象征性动物的直译或意译,实现了传递中国文化内涵的译本功能。而释意派理论提倡,翻译应跳出简单的语言符号,实现文本意义的转换。在时间地点和典故的翻译中,译者并非单方面的寻求语言的互换,而是着力挖掘它的内在所指,以自己的理解将其再现给读者,扫清读者的阅读障碍。当然,译者有时难免会高估读者对中国文化的了解程度,在翻译文中所提到的各类文化现象的过程中,释译上用力不均,造成呈现力度不一。但总体上说,罗慕士已较为成功的达到了展现和传播中国小说和中华文化的目的。本人认为,在对这些文化元素的处理上,译者应适时融入更为细致的解释性翻译,以利读者的理解。
