20世纪初的爱尔兰,民族解放运动及文化复兴运动风起云涌,政治和文化领域都涌现出对追寻民族身份的渴求。爱尔兰文学家詹姆士·乔伊斯就是受到这股浪潮冲击的代表人物之一,他身上有着更强烈的对民族身份和自我身份的双重探求。在弥漫着瘫痪和异化气氛的爱尔兰,他找不到心灵的归宿、情感的寄托,个人的理想与价值无法得到实现。爱尔兰的悲惨命运和凄凉境遇,促使他选择自我流放,在肉体游移在欧洲的岁月,他的灵魂又一次次回归故里。矛盾的个体,边缘的身份,让他身在爱尔兰却找不到自我;身处异乡,倒更坚定了他的民族身份认同。本文由包括引言、四个主要章节和结论三部分组成。引言简要地综述了关于《尤利西斯》中对身份探求的研究文献,提及了乔伊斯的生平与作品,以及对本文的理论依据(后殖民女性主义)的阐述。论文第一章从后殖民女性主义的理论视角,剖析了莫莉在小说大部分章节中不在场的缘由。父权制社会中,女性的他者地位、边缘化的形象刻画、行为的隐形和生存空间的“失根”性都在此一一展现。第二章诠释莫莉尴尬的境遇。颠覆的婚姻关系导致了她的矛盾心态,她既相信与渴望爱情,又是婚姻的受难者与承受者。第三章探讨了莫莉如何从一个不确定的女性个体身份到她女性意识的觉醒和性别角色的定位。她的身份兼具两种相斥的特质:家庭主妇和浪漫情人。第四章分析了莫莉的犹疑徘徊,最终她逃离精神孤独,寻求自我身份的回归。最后一部分为结论,本文认为莫莉实际上乃是摈弃了狭隘民族主义和殖民主义偏见的、富于广泛的包容性和无限生命力的世界文化的化身。她与数个性伙伴的关系乃是爱尔兰民族文化和英国文化杂交的象征模式。曾经沉默、被动、缺场的双重他者,在小说结尾部分“珀涅罗珀”中终于喊出了自己的声音。莫莉的形象寄托了乔伊斯对爱尔兰民族文化的期望以及他的世界文化理想。
