On the Translation of English Proverbs

英语谚语是英语语言文学的瑰宝,是英语民族智慧的结晶。英语谚语包罗万象,堪称一部高度浓缩的百科全书。它们以最简短的形式表达最丰富的内容,语言生动活泼。英语谚语深深植根于英语民族的社会生活,和他们的历史、风俗、生活习惯、社会环境及自然环境密切相关。英语谚语打开了了解英语民族文化的一扇窗,透过这一扇窗,人们可以看到英语民族在其社会、文化习俗、心理等方面所具有的风采与魅力。英语谚语内容丰富,语言艺术形式完美。作为英语语言和文化的不可或缺的一部分,英语谚语在英语学习和文化交际中起着重大的作用。因此,研究英语谚语的汉译就变得非常必要。奈达提出的“功能对等”理论是指导英语谚语汉译的理论基础。它主张把“读者反应”作为评价翻译好坏的标准,追求最切近的自然对等。在功能对等理论指导下,本文提出了英语谚语汉译的几个原则,即重点考虑中国读者的反应,使译文读者尽可能产生与原文读者相似的反应;如果英语谚语采用口语化的语言,文字浅显易懂,译文也应该这样;如果英语谚语典雅古朴,译文应保留这种特色;谚语的翻译应该反映其传播经验、教诲、劝戒的功能。为了能够翻译好英语谚语,还应该探讨其汉译时存在的困难和问题。本文从内容、形式和修辞三方面研究了英语谚语的特点及其造成的翻译困难。本文把英语谚语按来源分成四部分,详细地探讨了其汉译问题。每一部分都有相应的翻译方法、技巧和例句。本文的结构:引言部分提出了研究对象,指出了研究英语谚语汉译的重要性和英语谚语汉译中存在的问题。第一章是文献综述;第二章是理论框架;第三章探讨了英语谚语由于其特点给翻译造成的困难和问题,并提出了翻译英语谚语的原则;第四章、第五章、第六章和第七章分别探讨来自普通大众、《圣经》、莎士比亚及其他名人、希腊、罗马神话和寓言的英语谚语的翻译;第八章是结论。
