翻译目的与译者伦理 ——以林纾翻译《黑奴吁天录》为个案

近几年来,在东西方的翻译研究领域中出现了这样一个趋势,即翻译研究从语言学向文化和政治转向,从研究主流翻译实践向创造性的翻译转向,以及从原文为导向向译文为导向的研究方法转向。这些趋势大大拓展了翻译研究的领域,更为贴近现实和客观。这当中最为瞩目的学术热潮当属九十年代开始兴起的“文化转向”,以及“翻译伦理的回归”。林纾是中国晚清最负盛名的翻译家之一,是翻译西洋文学作品的第一人。作为一位具有强烈的爱国热情的翻译家,林纾的翻译活动带有明确的目的。林纾的译书动机在翻译《黑奴吁天录》的过程中体现得尤为明显:开启明智,并激发国人反帝的爱国热情。从目的论的视角来看,林纾对原作中关于奴隶制、宗教和文化的内容以及原作的叙述结构所进行的创造性叛逆是由其翻译目的所决定的,并受到当时社会文化背景和目标读者群的影响。同时,林纾在翻译的过程中,处处体现出他固有的儒家思想以及一些根深蒂固的伦理观念,可以说其伦理观对其译作产生过巨大的影响。本文以林纾翻译《黑奴吁天录》为个案,研究译者的翻译目的以及伦理观。译者的翻译目的在翻译过程中起着重要的作用,即影响着译者选择什么样的文本翻译以及采取怎样的翻译方法和策略。本文详细分析了林纾在翻译活动中的目的性。在选材过程中,林纾对原文的选择是有目的的,他选择翻译那些能表达他政治理想的作品。在翻译过程中,林纾也有着自己的翻译目的,并为之采取了特定的翻译策略和方法。与此同时,其具有儒家文化思想的伦理观也深深影响着其翻译策略的选择。因此,本文将从林纾的翻译目的着手,分析其翻译过程中所体现出的伦理思想,并试图阐述两者之间的关系。
