从功能翻译理论看电影字幕的翻译 ——《阿甘正传》个案研究

随着影视文化业的发展,电影字幕翻译的重要性日益突显出来,并逐渐受到学者和译者的关注。本文在前人研究的基础上另辟蹊径,应用德国功能翻译理论的分析方法,研究影响电影字幕翻译策略的因素。根据功能翻译理论的“目的论”,电影字幕翻译是有目的的行为,字幕翻译过程的至高原则是该翻译活动本身的目的。而每部电影的具体翻译目的不同,又决定了字幕翻译需采用不同的策略。同时,功能翻译理论吸收了‘行为理论’的元素,认为电影字幕翻译是人与人之间的互动行为,而不仅仅是由译者一人所决定的过程。在字幕翻译的过程中,作为译文接受者的观众的作用尤其重要,因为电影字幕翻译的目的和功能是由外国观众的需求和期待决定的。因此,在翻译之前,译者必须对观众的需求及相应产生的译本功能和翻译目的有所把握。此外,电影字幕翻译也是一种文本处理行为,必须符合“连贯原则”和“忠实原则”。连贯原则要求字幕翻译能为观众所接受;忠实原则诠释了原文与译文的关系,二者之间关系的程度则由具体翻译目的决定。文本间连贯服从于文本内连贯,两者都服从于目的原则。三种原则的关系决定了在字幕翻译中,译文的可接受性要比忠实性更重要。把上述理论应用于《阿甘正传》电影字幕的翻译并通过问卷调查和分析,作者发现,《阿甘正传》的中国观众对字幕的首要需求是字幕的信息功能,该电影字幕翻译的目的就是实现这一信息功能。根据这一主旨,译者采用了删减、改译、直译加注等策略保证翻译目的的实现。结合例子分析,作者发现,译者所选取的翻译策略体现了以译本信息传递之目的为根本的指导原则,关注观众的需求与感受,使观众从电影观赏中获得了更为完整的愉悦与享受。从功能主义角度剖析电影字幕翻译策略是本文的出发点,结合电影个案《阿甘正传》了解并印证决定译者翻译策略的各种因素是本文在描述性研究中所关注的焦点。本文所进行的研究不仅对提高实际的电影字幕翻译水平有所裨益,同时在宏观上也有助于深化我们对翻译理论的认识和理解。希望通过本文所付出的努力,能够吸引更多的学者关注电影翻译这一新兴的翻译领域。
