归化或异化：从后殖民主义视角看《红楼梦》文化因素的翻译

后殖民主义作为近年来在学术界新兴的课题,正在日益和翻译科学相结合。后殖民语境下的翻译研究因意识形态的介入和传统的翻译研究相去甚远。继翻译研究的文化转向之后,学者们将目光投向了影响和控制翻译的政治问题。本文的一个基本前提就是后殖民时代的翻译不再是一种纯美学或语言转换活动,它所涉及的文化问题,是一种政治行为。世界上存在的权力差异决定了翻译的流向和取材,不同译者采用的不同的翻译策略也是由其所处的意识形态和文化背景而决定的。《红楼梦》是中国最著名的古典名著之一,其中蕴涵着丰富的文化内涵。可以说《红楼梦》是中国文化的百科全书,因为它几乎涉及到中国文化的方方面面。《红楼梦》英译对译者来说是一个很大的挑战。随着中外文化交流的日益发展,《红楼梦》已被翻译成十多种文字。本论文试图以《红楼梦》的两种全译本---A Dream of Red Mansions（杨宪益译）和The Story of the Stone（戴卫·霍克斯译）为蓝本,探索《红楼梦》中文化因素的处理和翻译。分析了在权利差异下不平等的文化交流现象,进一步说明了翻译在后殖民主义语境中是被强势权利所控制的并通过归化的策略来达到其文化同化的目的。本论文首先扼要回顾了翻译研究的历史概况,阐述了翻译的文化转向和后殖民主义翻译理论下归化和异化在翻译中的应用。通过两译本的对比分析,论述了两译者在处理文化因素中采取的不同翻译策略,说明了在权利差异下不平等的文化交流现象。进而从后殖民的视角对归化、异化问题进行了再思考。作者指出译者不应追求绝对意义的归化或异化,而应在充分尊重差异性的基础之上,通过适当的杂合将译文营造为一种“第三空间”,使原语文化和目的语文化得以在其中进行平等的对话,从而促进两种文化的融合与共通。最后作者提出翻译研究中应对各流派采取尊重和包容的态度,互相吸收,扬长避短,从而促使翻译学朝全面、系统的方向前进。
