A Comparative Study on Cultural Misreading in the Two English Versions of San Guo Yan Yi

八十年代翻译研究发生文化转向之后,人们开始从跨文化的角度来审视翻译。从文化角度研究翻译,这为人们重新认识翻译中不完全的忠实的现象提供了全新的较科学的解释。本文所讨论的文化误读就是指这种传统意义上的不忠实现象。本文以现代阐释学理论为依据对文学翻译中的文化误读现象进行剖析。根据现代阐释学理论,由于理解的历史性,文化误读现象在翻译过程中是不可避免的;其存在说明了翻译不是对原作的简单复制,而是译者对原作的创造性叛逆;译者通过误读原文以求满足译文读者的期待视野;译者忠实于原文及原文作者不是亦步亦趋地服从,而是有目的、创造性的。本文通过C. H. Brewitt-Taylor和Moss Roberts翻译的我国四大名著之一《三国演义》的英译本中部分文化误读例子,讨论文化误读存在的必然性及其产生原因。英译本中的文化误读的产生既有主观原因也有客观因素。主观原因主要是译者的前预式,译者的主体性和读者的接受性。译者的前预式是指他在阅读原文以前就已形成的固有观念和认知水平。其中包括他不同于汉语的语言背景,这就导致了他对原文的误读。译者的政治观念,审美趣味和伦理价值形成了他自己的期待视野,这一期待视野既不同于译文读者也不同于源语读者,它在翻译过程中不断影响译者对原文产生误读。客观上,英汉语之间巨大的差异会在一定程度上设置文化障碍造成文化误读。由于目的语读者的接受性有别于源语读者,翻译汉语中独特的文化意象也会产生文化误读。与此同时,本文还分析了《三国演义》英译本中的文化误读可能带来的积极和消极影响。文化误读的积极意义在于有时候会促进异文化对原著和源语文化的包容,并且丰富译入语的文学体裁和文学写作技巧。然而文化误读的消极意义却更为显著。它有时会歪曲原文,误解原文主题,从而阻碍源语文化准确和积极的传播与交流。最后通过以上分析,作者认为在文学翻译实践中,为了更有效的实现文化交流,译者应该充分认识到文化误读可能带来的积极和消极影响,尽量避免文化误读的消极影响。本文只研究了《三国演义》两个全译本中部分文化误读现象,仍存在许多不足之处,需要更深入地研究。
