从文化翻译论角度看文化负载词汇的解读 ——评析《京华烟云》中文化负载词汇的翻译策略

翻译是人类最悠久的文化交流活动,翻译离不开语言的转换,但它不仅只是单纯的语言转换,因为语言反映文化,而且受文化制约。因此,要成功地进行语言转换,不但要掌握语言,而且要熟悉两种语言所代表的文化,而翻译研究实际就是文化互动研究。自一九九零年由苏珊?巴斯奈特和安德烈?勒弗尔合编的《翻译,历史与文化》一书出版,他们第一次正式提出翻译研究“文化转向”的发展方向,从此开始了翻译研究的又一突破性进展。《京华烟云》(Moment in Peking)一书是由林语堂先生创作的英文原著,这一独创性决定了《京华烟云》可以看作是一部翻译著作。本文以翻译理论中文化学派的代表人物苏珊?巴斯奈特的文化翻译理论为依据,通过对林语堂所著《京华烟云》中文化负载词汇之翻译策略的分析得出:文化负载词汇是文化的重要构成部分,因此它们传译的准确与否,将直接影响到译文的质量;同时,从文化翻译理论的优势出发说明翻译活动是基于两种语言之间的文化交流,翻译不单纯是两种语言在形式上的转换,而且还包含着两种文化在交流之中的相互渗透和相互兼容。本文分为六章。第一章为前言,总体介绍全文。第二章在语言、文化和翻译关系的基础上阐述了由苏珊?巴斯奈特所提出的文化翻译理论。第三章阐明了以文化负载词汇为分析重点的原因。第四章介绍了林语堂先生的生平及其代表作《京华烟云》。第五章在对《京华烟云》中文化负载词汇进行分类的基础上,以文化翻译理论为指导解读了作品中文化负载词汇所采用翻译策略的优势与不足。文章的结论部分则归纳了文化翻译理论对翻译实践的指导性在翻译文本中的优势体现。通过理论联系实际,本文从翻译的角度出发,阐述了在翻译的文化转向研究中,翻译过程与文化解读是密不可分的,翻译文本尤其是文化负载词汇的解读在指导翻译实践活动和实现翻译研究科学性的过程中都是不可或缺的。文化解读策略只有运用于不同的译者,不同的社会文化,具体文本具体分析,文本的翻译才能达到最佳的文化传递效果。而林语堂在特定的历史时期,站在中西文化的交汇面上,用中西比较的眼光,带着特定的翻译目的,采取了独特的翻译策略,达到了翻译的预期功能——“对西方人讲中国文化”。这些策略既受其翻译观的影响,又是当时社会环境与翻译要求共同作用的结果。林语堂先生的《京华烟云》为这一方面的翻译实践提供了一些可参照的方法,是成功的创作兼译作。本文最后的结论是:苏珊?巴斯奈特的文化翻译观对揭示文本中文化负载词汇的翻译策略是具有指导意义的,在翻译的文化转向研究中,翻译过程与文化解读是密不可分的。而林语堂先生的原作尽管存在着不尽完美之处,但仍有许多成功甚至经典之处,从而进一步验证了在文化翻译理论的指导下,文化负载词汇翻译的可能性和操作性。
