On E-C Translation of English Humor from Functionalist Approach

论文摘要

本文旨在从功能主义翻译角度探讨英语幽默的汉译。在过去的二三十年里,幽默及其翻译问题引起了国内外学术界很大的关注。普遍的观点是幽默翻译跟诗歌翻译一样让人绝望。译者在面对由英语语言本身特点和浓郁英美文化因素形成的幽默时几乎无从下手。在中国译界,最常见的一种幽默分类方式是将其分为情景幽默和非情景幽默。前者易翻,后者难度很大。学者们对此提供的策略包括直译,归化及注解等。传统的翻译理论往往不能为那些不符合传统等值标准但却经实践证明十分成功的幽默翻译策略提供理论支持。本文从英语幽默的功能和其翻译目的出发,对幽默翻译这一极具目的性的活动进行了深入分析。作者选择德国功能翻译理论作为研究基础,提倡以实现各种幽默翻译主要功能为导向的翻译方法。以目的论为代表的功能主义理论指导下的翻译行为,秉承“目的决定方式”的原则。在目的论理论框架中,目的文本是否实现其预定功能成为判断译本质量的标准,由此为幽默译者为克服语言文化差异而采取的各种策略提供有力的理论支持。在以上理论的指导下,本文首先分析了英语幽默的不同功能,驳斥了“幽默只有一种功能”,“不能让人发笑的幽默译本就不是好译本”的说法。本文认为绝大多数幽默文本的功能并不单一。让人心情愉悦只是幽默最基本的一个功能。幽默文本可能同时具备呼唤,所指,表达,寒暄四大功能及其众多子功能中的一种或多种。随后作者将幽默翻译归纳为两种情形来探讨功能翻译策略的应用,指出当幽默文本的首要功能的实现与其基本功能的实现产生矛盾时,在翻译过程中应该以满足实现首要功能为第一目的。有时甚至可以为了保证实现首要功能而舍弃让人发笑这一基本功能,关键是要保证译本在目的读者和目的文化中实现其预定的交际功能。在实例分析中作者发现很多看似不等同的翻译实际是译者有意的创造性叛逆,最终是为了更好实现该幽默翻译的目的。此外,本文还特别指出灵感和创新思维在翻译幽默时的作用。“神来之笔”在幽默翻译中常常出现,令人叫绝。而在偏好娱乐的当代社会,大众传播中的英语幽默翻译与本土耳熟能详的幽默相结合这一创新型策略往往能在目的受众中产生良好效果。
