语境与科技英语翻译

论文摘要

随着现代科学技术的发展,科技英语已逐渐发展成为一种重要的英语文体。自20世纪70年代以来,国际上对科技英语给予了极大关注,不少学者对其进行了专门研究。科技英语的研究初期主要集中的是诸如词汇构成、语法结构、语态等表层语言现象,这只是对语域的静态分析。相应地,传统的科技英语翻译只注重词、句翻译,并集中在词汇、语法和专业内容三个方面,这些理论自然有其价值,但容易造成片面性及翻译的机械主义。因此,到目前为止,我国科技英语翻译的现状还不能够另人满意。译文含糊不清、晦涩难懂、误译、漏译等现象比较普遍。而造成这些问题的其中一个很重要的原因就是缺乏对语境的研究。语境即“语言环境”,是指影响语义和表达的一系列主客观因素,它是语言交际的基础。到20世纪60年代后期,随着社会语言学和语用学的兴起和发展,国内外语言学界对语境的研究取得了重要的进展。语境的重要作用在科技英语翻译中也绝不能忽视。但目前还很少有人做过这一方面的研究。因此,本文试图从语境的角度来研究科技英语翻译,将语境对科技英语翻译的制约与作用作为中心问题加以探讨。首先介绍了语境的定义,历史,功能和分类,然后结合科技英语的文体特征,翻译标准等方面,从词法、句法、语篇等角度来分析科技英语翻译。基于一些学者对语境的分类,本文作者在考虑科技文体特征的情况下,将语境分为语言语境和非语言学语境,前者包括词汇语境、句法语境和语篇语境,后者包括社会语境、专业背景语境和文化语境,从而研究语境中的不同因素对于科技英语翻译的制约与作用。特别是对于一些以往很少讨论过的社会语境和文化语境做了尝试性的分析。本文在实践和理论上都具有一定意义。然而,从语境的角度来探讨科技英语翻译是一条较新的途径,本文只是一种尝试,还需实践的检验。作者衷心希望本文能提供科技英语翻译研究的一个新视角,促进人们对科技英语本质的认识,以更好地促进我国的对外科技交流活动。
