纽带与枷锁 ——解读《钟形罩》中的母女关系

论文摘要

本文从女性主义与精神分析等多重角度,分析了希尔维亚·普拉斯的自传体小说《钟形罩》中母女关系这一主题。一直以来,小说中的母女关系常常被理解为女主人公的成长受到母亲的“占有欲”遏制,她必须反抗来获得真正的自我,以至于形成了“仇母”心理。本文认为,这种看法是有失偏颇的,原因是他们过于受普拉斯的诗和日记中“母女关系”的影响,而没有立足于小说本身的描写来理解。本文认为,小说中的母亲不是一个可怕又可恶的形象。实际上,她既是父权文化的代言人,本身还是它的牺牲品。而女儿对母亲的态度也不只是排斥与厌恶,同时还有认同与依赖的一面。本文指出,女儿Esther的这种矛盾态度源于她成长的愿望与自己精神上的婴儿化倾向之间的冲突。书中有大量与母亲的子宫有关的意象,如浴缸,装胎儿的玻璃罐,地下室等,这些都象征了女儿的退化倾向,即对子宫般的封闭、安全的空间的渴求。但是同时这些意象又象征着静止、停滞,乃至死亡。因此,对女儿来说,在精神上退回到胎儿(婴儿)时期与母亲一体的状态,既代表获得无限的安全感,又面临丧失个体独立性的可能。她的自杀体现的也是她的婴儿化,而不是对死去的父亲挥之不去的依恋,如一些学者所谓的“恋父情结”。女主人公一直处于这种在退化与个人独立性之间的两难境地,虽然小说中不乏有重生的意象出现,但是,最终无论是与母亲的关系还是身体治疗都没有给她真正带来重生。这也许表明了作家普拉斯对于在父权文化下,建立健康母女关系的悲观情绪。
