英语谚语的认知研究

论文摘要

根据Raymond (1995),谚语是那些人们用来表述众所周知的真理、社会准则或反映道德主题的固定句式。人们在日常交流中常使用谚语来表达他们对信仰、价值观以及周围环境的理解。同时,许多谚语也对人们的日常生活起到指导作用。作为一个重要的语言现象,谚语一直以来都受到国内外学者的广泛关注。但现有的研究大多从传统语言学的角度出发,探讨个别谚语的理解和翻译。本研究从认知语言学角度,探讨英语谚语的认知机制,进一步分析英语谚语的理解过程。本论文首先对国内外的英语谚语研究进行了较为详细的综述,并且详细介绍了本研究的理论框架——概念隐喻和转喻理论。认知语言学认为隐喻和转喻是认知机制,广泛存在于人们的生活当中,是人们对抽象概念认识和表达的重要工具。本研究基于语料,对英语谚语的认知过程进行了综合分析。语料主要来自《英语谚语荟萃》(1997),对其中抽样选出来的350条英语谚语进行系统分类。然后在概念隐喻和概念转喻的理论下对语料进行定量和定性分析。运用Lakoff和Gibbs的概念隐喻理论和概念转喻理论,探究在谚语理解中所涉及的隐喻和转喻两种概念映射。基于对谚语的总体研究,得出以下结论:(1)英语谚语中存在大量的概念隐喻和转喻,证明了Lakoff关于概念隐喻普遍性的学说;(2)概念隐喻和转喻存在系统性,在同一概念隐喻下存在很多紧密联系的隐喻式表达;(3)隐喻和转喻两种认知过程的互补和融合有助于更深入地认知和理解谚语;(4)人们在实际生活中积累的经验、知识,以及特定的文化对英语谚语的认知起到了非常重要的作用。本研究分析了谚语的认知理据,揭示了谚语理解的认知过程,同时帮助英语学习者更深入完整地理解英语谚语和正确地使用谚语。
