衔接手段及其在大学英语阅读教学中的应用

阅读教学是外语教学的重要组成部分,如何提高学生的阅读能力是目前大学英语教学中迫切需要解决的问题。笔者通过对学生阅读状况的调查、教师教学方法的访谈以及对大学英语课堂教学的观摩,认为目前大学英语阅读教学中以词汇,语法和句子为课堂教学重点的现象依然普遍存在,很多教师未能充分运用语篇的“衔接手段”指导学生对文章的深层理解和把握,学生驾驭语篇阅读的能力较弱,对文章整体思想内容把握不准。同时还发现很多教师虽然掌握了较系统的理论知识,却未能将其应用到实际教学中。语言不是存在于离散的词或句子中,而是存在于连接的语篇中。衔接(cohesion)是语篇的重要特征之一。语句中的各成分之间及语句间的衔接关系和衔接手段是构成语篇的关键要素。衔接手段分为五大类:照应(reference)、替代(substitution)、省略(ellipsis)、连接(conjunction)以及词汇衔接(1exical cohesion)。一段语言要成为语义连贯的语篇,必须要使用某种或某几种衔接手段。鉴于阅读教学的现状,本文拟运用韩礼德和哈桑的衔接理论,结合大量实例,阐述上述五种衔接手段在语篇中的作用,指导教师如何将衔接手段应用到大学英语阅读教学中,以改变学生语篇驾驭能力弱,对文章整体思想内容把握不准这一现状,提高学生的阅读能力;同时,在一定程度上提高教师运用理论指导教学的意识,避免教学中理论与实践的脱节。为保证例证的可靠性和说服力,所选实例均来自《新视野大学英语III》。为了验证衔接理论对大学英语阅读教学的效果,作者进行了实证研究,研究对象为青岛科技大学信息学院两个自然班的80名学生和6名英语教师。对学生进行问卷调查,阅读测试和实验教学,以验证衔接手段对阅读理解的作用;同时对6名英语教师就教学方法和衔接意识等方面进行访谈,以了解教师对语篇衔接理论和手段的运用情况。本研究证明将语篇衔接应用于英语阅读教学的方法实用可行,能够有效提高学生的语篇驾驭能力,使学生整体阅读能力得到提高。教师在阅读教学中应突出强调衔接手段在语篇构建中所起的作用,并有意识地加强学生语篇衔接意识的培养。
