信达雅标准下的三个英文《论语》译本之比较研究

论文摘要

被列为中国经典古籍《四书》之一的《论语》,是中国思想和文化历史长河中的最重要的经典古籍之一。在这篇论文里,笔者通过对《论语》的三个英译本进行比较,对翻译标准问题进行了探讨,指出翻译标准的选择可能会在一定程度上对译文的质量产生影响。在文中,笔者首先介绍了孔子及其生平,而且简要概括了《论语》一书的社会和历史地位和它在国内外的广泛影响。笔者还介绍了包括《论语》英译本在内的一些外文译本。接着笔者解释了选择这三个英译本的原因,而且介绍了一些至今在中国仍有影响力的翻译理论。在这篇论文中,笔者用著名的严复“信达雅”原则作为标准从正反两方面评价《论语》的这三个英译本,还从这三个英译本的结构、文体、语义方面进行了点评。笔者一方面指出从总体上来看,威利的译本较之其他两部译本要好些,尽管威利的译本在语义表达方面还存在一些问题(即是在严复“信”的原则方面还做得不够好);另一方面其试图证明严复的“信达雅”翻译标准并未过时,它也许对翻译《论语》甚至于其它中国古代黄籍的翻译都起到积极的作用。在对一些实际运用的翻译方法进行比较和评价后,笔者给出一些相对合理的建议,如在意译中加入直译的翻译手法。在文章的最后,笔者提出严复的“信达雅”翻译原则不仅是我们翻译工作的需求,而且对我们鉴赏译本也起到了较好的指导作用。笔者希望这些研究将有益于中国经典古籍的翻译工作,同时希望文中提出的一些建议将有利于今后中国经典古籍翻译水平的提高。
