中国英语学习者对语法隐喻的文体价值的认识 ——以说明文写作为例

自从二十世纪六十年代韩礼德将语法隐喻作为一个概念提出后,作为所有成人语言的一个普遍特征,语法隐喻在过去的五十年中受到了极大的关注。研究者们从语法隐喻与传统词汇隐喻的关系,隐喻程度以及语篇隐喻的存在等展开了广泛的探索,然而他们似乎都忽视了对语法隐喻的文体价值的探讨。与此同时,文体学并为涉及语法隐喻,尤其是应用该理论来对中国英语学习者说明文写作中反映出的文体恰当性的分析上。鉴于此背景,本文旨在于填补语法隐喻研究和中国英语学习者文体意识研究间的空白。本文首先陈述了语法隐喻的整体框架,然后从语义的三个基本元功能的角度对语法隐喻的文体价值做了系统的分析。确立此理论基础后,通过对三组由具有不同英语水平的写作者写成的说明文中语法隐喻使用的对比研究,本文讨论了中国英语学习者在说明文写作中反映出的对语法隐喻的文体价值的认识现状。数据分析表明中国英语学习者没有充分意识到语法隐喻的文体价值而且认识水平与语言水平具有关联。中国英语学习者和英语本国语写作者的文章中不同的语法隐喻的分布模式印证了这一结论。本国语写作者和中国英语学习者最突出的差异在于对名物化和逻辑隐喻的使用上。在人际隐喻的使用上,中国英语学习者尤其是中级学习者习惯性地依赖隐喻式表达,从而破坏了说明文论述的客观性和可靠性。在语篇隐喻的处理上,中国英语学习者表现了与英语本国语写作者相同的技巧。本文尝试分析了中国英语学习者使用语法隐喻的问题的一些内在原因:第一,英语和汉语在语法隐喻表达上的差异;第二,写作教学上的不足。最后本文提出了一些旨在提高学习者对语法隐喻的文体价值认识的可行的教学建议。
