自20世纪70年代以来,语码转换作为一种独特的语言现象,受到了国内外语言学家的关注与重视。在语言学领域,分别有学者从社会语言学、心理语言学、语法学等方向对其进行研究。近年来,语用学家也把其纳入了自己的研究范畴,给语码转换现象的研究注入了新的活力。提到语用学就不能不提比利时国际语用学学会秘书长Jef Verschueren。他在其新作Understanding Pragmatics中提出了顺应论。指出,语言使用的过程就是语言选择的过程。同一语言内部的选择是为了顺应,不同语言间的选择(语码转换)亦是为了顺应,从而使交际顺利进行。国内也有语言学者对顺应理论及其应用加以研究与探索。其中,于国栋提出语码转换的语言顺应模式(2001),认为交际者进行语码转换是为了顺应,从而实现或接近某个或某些具体的交际目的,是一种交际策略,是一种具体的对不同语言或语言变体的选择。他把顺应的具体对象分为三类,即对语言现实、社会约束和心理动机的顺应。本研究以Jef Verschueren的语用顺应论为理论框架,借鉴于国栋提出的语码转换的语言顺应模式,采用定量及定性分析相结合的研究方法,通过分析具体教师课堂上英汉语码转换现象,来探究其中的语用顺应性。研究发现,教师在课堂上使用英汉语码转换是一个顺应的过程,其实现了:(1)对语言现实的顺应(英汉语言的差异等);(2)对社会规约的顺应(回避社会禁忌等);(3)对教师角色(宏观角色和微观角色)的顺应;(4)对教师心理动机的顺应; (5)对教师及学生语言能力的顺应。这些顺应不仅为解释教师在课堂上实现英汉语码转换提供了理论依据,为我们研究语码转换开拓了新的视角,而且为更好的实现此种转换产生了一定影响。通过研究,作者力图找出教师课堂语码转换的动机及功能,考查语用顺应模式是如何在教师课堂语码转换中运作的,及其对教师语码转换这一现象的阐释力。期望能对探索二语教学的策略有所贡献。
