汪榕培《诗经》英译本中的文化缺省及其补偿策略

文化是一个复杂的词汇,它与翻译存在着密切联系。现在越来越多的学者已经认识到翻译绝不仅仅是语言的转换,更涉及到社会和文化因素的交流。文化缺省是指作者和目标读者已知的相关文化背景知识的省略。文化缺省的内容通常是在文本之外,而非体现在文本之中。由于生活在不同文化中,人们的认知环境有很大不同,因此在跨文化交际中,文化缺省的存在导致交流上的障碍。文化缺省在诗歌中是一种普遍存在的现象,对译者而言,诗歌翻译的最大困难在于对文化缺省进行补偿,从而再现诗歌的美学特征与艺术感染力。《诗经》是世界上最早的诗集之一,涉及的内容很多,被誉为再现我国古代社会的百科全书,它深刻地反映了从西周早期到春秋中期社会生活的方方面面。从18世纪以来,许多学者将《诗经》翻译成英语。这些不同的英文版本对于向西方传播中国的诗歌起到了重要作用,但是由于对于中国文化理解的局限和出版时间的久远,未能体现诗歌的真正内涵。本文以汪榕培先生《诗经》英译本为例,运用翻译补偿理论评述了英译本中使用的文化缺省和补偿策略,并列举详实的例证来对英译本中采用的补偿手段进行剖析,希望能对理解翻译作品、指导文学翻译有所帮助。
