随着科技和社会的发展,以及中国对外传播活动的深入,软新闻比例大幅上升,软新闻汉译英的重要性日益凸显。软新闻的特点使它具有较高的新闻价值和宣传价值,为翻译研究者开辟了一个新的研究领域,本文的研究对象即为软新闻的汉译英。软新闻除了具备新闻的基本文体特点外,还具有它自身的特点。软新闻的翻译不仅仅是一个从源语到译入语的语言转换过程,它更是一个根据译语文化不断调整,使受众更容易接受的过程。作者提出必须采取不同于硬新闻翻译的灵活多变的翻译策略和方法。作者首先对功能翻译理论发展演变的过程进行了回顾,论述了功能派对翻译实质的分析,并解释了该理论中的一些概念,然后对功能派的核心理论—目的论进行了详尽阐述。通过对软新闻文本特点和传播功能的分析和与之相对的硬新闻的对比分析,作者发现功能翻译理论特别是文本类型和目的论对软新闻翻译的应用提供了有力的理论指导。《今日中国》是专门报道中国的外文软新闻杂志,国家对该刊物的重视以及它在对外宣传中所扮演的重要角色决定了作者将其作为软新闻汉译英文本分析的具权威性的典型。通过大量的实例分析研究,作者归纳出了软新闻汉译英的常见翻译策略:删减,增释和重组,以期对新闻翻译工作者提供参考。
