作为一种修辞手段,重复手段不仅对语篇的整体连贯起着不容忽视的作用,而且可以表达不同的评价功能。根据现有文献发现,有关重复修辞格的研究多数局限在修辞学领域内。鉴于此,本研究试图将修辞学、系统功能语言学、语料库语言学三者结合起来,对具有评价意义的重复手段进行历时研究。本文以系统功能语言学下的评价理论为理论框架,自建“美国总统就职演说辞语料库”。利用该语料库,以AntConc 3.2.2和UAM CorpusTool为标注和检索工具,统计重复手段在19世纪、20世纪两个不同时期美国总统就职演说辞中出现的频率,旨在考察具有评价意义的重复手段在两个世纪使用频率上的异同点,并分析各自的理据。本文的研究结果表明,从19世纪到20世纪,在美国总统就职演说辞中,具有评价意义的重复手段使用频率逐渐降低。其理据主要有三个方面:(1)现代英语的发展;(2)两个世纪美国听众所受教育的程度不同;(3)语言应用中的经济原则。本研究的结果还表明,人际标识语和具有评价意义的形容词,它们的重复手段使用频率逐渐增多,表态度功能的重复手段使用频率也逐渐增多。这些发现有助于实现美国总统就职演说辞的社会语用目的,即阐释施政纲领,表达特定的价值取向和立场观点,增强演说辞的人际功能。
